Steve Matthews

The Future of European TV Production

London-based Steve Matthews has become world-known because of his function of Consulting Producer on The Borgias (2011-2013). In 2014 he was hired as HBO Europe’s executive producer for drama development. During 2016 Matthews became a guest tutor in MIDPOINT TV Launch.

Matthews´s prior experience includes script editing the BBC’s drama series Silent Witness and co-creating and producing Urban Gothic for UK’s Channel 5, as well as teaching at the NYU Tisch School’s Writing for Television program.

During 2011-2013 he was Consulting Producer on all three Neil Jordan’s historical-fiction drama television series The Borgias for Showtime Networks. The series is set around the turn of the 16th century and follows the Borgia family. It stars Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI. The Borgias was an international co-production filmed in Hungary. The renaissance scenery planned by Canadian production designer, François Séguin was built on an area of over one hectare, including various style buildings, gates, yards, squares, and also Vatican and Florence. After all this, everything was given to make a really successful series in Hungary.

Matthews also worked with Octagon Films in Dublin, where he produced four seasons of RTÉs gangster drama Love/Hate. The show depicts fictional characters in Dublin's criminal underworld. Love/Hate was mostly filmed in Dublin, with some scenes shot in bordering counties.

In 2014 Matthews was hired as HBO Europe’s executive producer for drama development. He works with the original production centers in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania and local creative teams on their original series and miniseries development as well as adaptations from international formats. As Antony Root, executive vice-president of original programming and production said: "Steve brings over 20 years of development and production experience across multiple drama genres, which I believe will be invaluable as we expand our output at HBO Europe.”

Matthews is currently overseeing Polish series Blinded by the Lights, and has worked on efforts such as Hungary’s Aranyelet and Czech series Wasteland. Wasteland was in development for much longer and took shape in the writers’ room, and it has taken almost three years to finalize. "We were able to build the writers’ room thanks to the generous development support from HBO and the dramaturgical collaboration with producer Steve Matthews, of HBO Europe,” said the producer Tomáš Hrubý. The first two episodes of the Wasteland had an advance screening at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July 2016, and in the Primetime program at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.

During 2016 Matthews became a guest tutor in MIDPOINT TV Launch.
