Unfortunately this year Mark H. Weingartner, ASC had to cancel his participation at Visegrad Film Forum due to conflicting schedules.

Director of photography and visual effects supervisor Mark H. Weingartner, ASC began his career as a theatrical lighting designer in New York. He migrated first into television and motion picture lighting, and subsequently into cinematography and visual effects. Weingartner has worked on every continent but Antarctica, and on projects ranging from studio tent-poles to indie films, TV shows, special venue projects, and documentaries, working in film formats from 16mm to IMAX and all manner of digital formats.

It’s very difficult for me to point to my work and show it off, because… If I’ve done my job correctly, and the visual effects house has done their job correctly, you can’t tell I was there.

Mark H. Weingartner, ASC

Invited to Hollywood by Richard Yuricich, ASC to work on Under Siege 2 where he worked on "the largest green screen that I had ever done, as Weingartner said. After this film Weingartner moved from New York to Los Angeles. At the same time he worked as gaffer on the VFX/miniature unit for Independence Day. He also worked as a technical consultant for the Bullet Time scene in Matrix.

As a VFX Director of Photography worked on films such as I Am LegendApocalypto, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Passion of the Christ, the last three Hunger Games films, the last two Twilight films, The Tourist, among others.

On The Tourist I spent couple of days with my 'train cameramen' shooting background plates for scenes in an imaginary train which goes from Paris to Venice. The director wanted to scenery to be Tuscany which isn´t between Paris and Venice. There is no train which goes direct from Paris to Venice. You actually have to change trains. They had already photographed the work inside the train and all I had to do was shoot background plates outside the train, so I could see where the lighting was coming from on a shot-by-shot basis and figure it out how to shoot those.

Mark H. Weingartner, ASC

Weingartner began his long association with Christopher Nolan as visual effects director of photography on Batman Begins, continuing on The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Dunkirk.

There’s an interesting issue of philosophy in VFX, which is constantly evolving. In the case of the pictures Mr. Nolan is making, he really doesn’t want flash visual effects, the VFX aren’t supposed to draw your attention to how cool they are. It’s all in service of the story and wherever we can do something practically we will.

Mark H. Weingartner, ASC

As a VFX supervisor Weingartner worked on Apocalypto (Motion Control Supervisor, Addl. VFX Supervisor), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Plate Supervisor, Motion Control Supervisor), I, Robot (Encodacam Supervisor), The Passion of the Christ (Motion Control Supervisor), Men in Black II (Blue Screen Consultant), Vanilla Sky (Green Screen and Motion Control Supervisor), Mission Impossible: II (Motion Control Supervisor, Green Screen Supervisor).

Weingartner is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Visual Effects Branch, the International Cinematographers Guild, and the Visual Effects Society. He has served for six years on the AMPAS Science-Technology Awards Committee, as a juror at Camerimage, and as a technology judge for Cinegear.
