Menandros and Thäis

Is it possible to create a low-budget film that feels like a blockbuster?

An experimental, feature-length adventure movie based on a novel by Ondřej Cikán. An Austrian/Czech co-production by Die Gruppe, FAMU and nutprodukce.

A kidnapped bride. A distraught hero. Odysseys in surreal worlds. At her wedding to Menandros, Thaïs is carried off by pirates. In his search for her, the bridegroom becomes a bloodthirsty avenger, his horse grows wings, a witch promises him another woman, King Xerxes attempts to unman him, but eventually everything comes to a happy ending. Or does it?Exclusive pre-premiere screening and case study during VFF!

“The project’s goal is to be innovative on a formal and dramaturgic level. It is not an ordinary film and it wasn’t created in a usual manner either. However, we believe that thanks to the co-operation of the Czech team with Austrian and German colleagues something remarkable was created, founded on an enthusiasm for common goals and not an effort to create a catchy international flic.”

An ancient road movie – this best characterises the movie Menandros & Thaïs, which balances on the edge of ancient pathos, trash genres of the 1970’s and 1980’s and postmodern quotations.

The film uses theatric imagery and theatric artisticconcepts to adapt the novel Menandros & Thaïs by Ondřej Cikán, an Austrian author of Czech origin. It is shot on a Canon 5D camera, special effects are captured on the indestructible GoPro camera. Famous Czech and international actors appear here - Jakub Gottwald, Ondřej Bauer, Jessyca R. Hauser, Violetta Zupancic and others.
