Is the knowing of our past history really important?

No words, no music, only sounds and pictures of slowly dying city. Case study of documentary by Sergei Loznitsa was shot with no dialogue and consists of black and white footage shot during the Siege of Leningrad in the Second World War, composed of unique material from Moscow film archives.


How to shoot reality or observational documentary?

Case study of another documentary by Sergei Loznitsa . Winter. Bus stop in a small village. People are waiting for a bus. They talk. Listening to their conversations the viewer can imagine the world they live in. United by the movement of the camera, the whole place and the people blend together. The ethnographic study which concentrates on the Russian older as they wait for a bus.

Her films You Will Never Understand This, It Happened Just Before and The 727 Days without Karamo have gained international recognition and won numerous film awards including Caligari Film Award at the Berlin Film Festival or Best Feature Documentary in IDFF Jihlava.

The Duke of Cinephilia

Peter Strickland is a cinephilic English director and writer. His first feature film Katalin Varga, micro-budget Romanian rural revenge drama went on to win numerous awards including a Silver Bear in Berlin and The European Film Academy's Discovery of the Year award in 2009. Strickland followed Katalin Varga with unsettling psychological thriller Berberian Sound Studio. The film was named British Film of the Year at the 2012 London Critics' Circle Film Awards. In 2014 he, directed a Bjork concert film. At the same year he has finished his latest film - The Duke of Burgundy, highly atmospheric pastiche of 1970s European sleaze.

The Rise of Czech TV Series

Pavla Janoušková Kubečková and Tomáš Hrubý, co-founders of nutprodukce, one of the leading Czech production companies. In 2013, produced by nutprodukce and scripted by writer Štěpán Hulík, the three-part HBO miniseries Burning Bush received critical acclaim (11 Czech lions, Czech Oscar candidate) for the way it dramatised the true story of Prague history student Jan Palace. Three years later, HBO Europe has reteamed with nutprodukce and scriptwriter Hulík for Pustina (Wasteland), an eight-part drama set in the Czech Republic that focuses on a mining village on the verge of extinction.

Film Architecture

Ludovica Ferrario, Italian production designer and art director, has worked with directors as Wim Wenders and Abbas Kiarostami and in the last years with Paolo Sorrentino - first as art director in Oscar winning drama The Great Beauty (2013), then as production designer in Youth (2015) and lately for The Young Pope (2016), HBO´s religious drama which was premiered at the 73rd Venice Film Festival, where the first two episodes were screened out of competition. It was the first time in the history of the festival that a TV series was a part of the program.
