Krzysztof Zanussi

Developing of a Story

Already his first films as The Structure of Crystal (Struktura Kryzstalu 1969), Family Life (Zycie rodzinne 1971), Illumination (Iluminacja 1973 – the main prize in Locarno), or Quarter year bilancing (Bilans kwartalny 1975 – prize from Berlin) were a continuance for the modernistic movements of the 60’s. At the same time they introduced the so-called film of the moral concerns. Krysztof Zanussi has had an impact on next generation of polish filmmakers, especially on Krzysztof Kieslowski.

The similar tendency could be spotted in the following film such as Prootecting Colouring (Barwy ochronne 1977 – the critic’s prize in Rotterdam), The Spiral (Spirala 1978) and The Constant (Konstanta 1980 – both awarded in Cannes). K. Zanussi began in the 80’s to shoot abroad. The film The Year of the Calm Sun (1984) comes from his period and was awarded with the grand prix in Venice. Among his last films we can find Life As a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease (Zycie jako smiertelna choroba przenoszona droga plciowa 2000) and Persona non grata (2005).

K. Zanussi as also an author of two books about amateur film, he is regularly giving lectures at various universities and he is also a director of TOR Film Studios. He was awarded for his life-work and not only once, he holds many degrees Doctor Honoris Causa and also the French Title of the Knighthood of Art and Culture.
